The fictional story “The Last Two AmericansAMP” was one of my most popular posts. So, I thought I’d pick up where Pete and Grace left off in “The Last Two Americans Part Two.” If you didn’t read the first part, make sure you click the link before reading part two. Pete and Grace are the last two Americans that are unvaccinated.
What Next?
Pete and Grace had been on the run from the government for two days. They reached the top of a mountain where they decided to camp for the night. Pete didn’t say anything to Grace, but he was wondering what they would do next. As he thought about it, he dozed off.
When Pete woke up the next morning, Grace was not there. He walked around the camp and whispered her name. But, there was no response. He walked a circle around the camp, but couldn’t find her. Now, he was getting worried. He came across a section of woods that had a lot of trampled weeds. And, he saw a path of trampled weeds leading away from the spot.
The Hunt
Pete wasn’t sure he should leave the camp in case she returned, but he decided to follow the trampled weeds to look for Grace. He walked as quietly as he could, and he used the machete to cut down the high brush. He must have walked about a mile when he finally heard voices.
Pete got as close as he could and hid behind a fallen tree. He heard them say “We’re waiting for the doctor to give her the vaccine.” Then somebody said “What about the guy? Should we go after him?” Another responded, “As soon as we get her vaccinated, we’ll use her to smoke him out.”
In a Pickle
Pete thought to himself, “Now I’m in a pickle. I have to do something. And fast.” He picked up his head just above the fallen tree. Pete saw Grace tied to a tree and three Marines. He started to quietly make his way toward the back of the tree Grace was tied to.
When he was about fifty yards away, he heard one of them say “She’s almost here with the vaccine.” He continued toward Grace. Then, the doctor arrived and moved toward Grace with the needle. Just as she lifted the needle, Pete threw a big stone in a different direction. The Marines figured it was Pete, and they set out to get him.
The Escape
The doctor looked away to see what the noise was, and she was starting to turn back around. Pete cut the ropes around the tree that were holding Grace with the machete and hit the doctor in the head with a rock. Then, he grabbed Grace and told her to follow him. They ran as fast as they could, knowing that the Marines would be coming soon.
Pete saw an abandoned car in the brush just ahead on his right. They ran to the car and got in the trunk. Then Pete pulled the trunk down until just before it would latch.
Close Call
Pete and Grace stayed hidden in the trunk for what seemed like an eternity. They were sore and hungry. When Pete asked Grace what happened to her, she told him she left the camp to go to the bathroom and they grabbed her. She told them that Pete fell off a cliff and he was dead so they wouldn’t try to find him.
They heard a voice say, “I’m gonna check out this abandoned car.” Then, they heard the car doors open and close. The voice said, “Let me look in the trunk.” But, another voice said, “No. Leave it alone. They told us to find their camp.”
They both had to go to the bathroom bad, so when it got quiet they opened the trunk and checked around. Then, they went to the bathroom and got back in the trunk.
Into the Dark
After it was dark for several hours, they got out of the trunk and started hiking. Pete wasn’t sure which way it was to get back to their campsite, so he led them upwards to the top of the mountain. They lost Grace’s backpack, so they only had Pete’s supplies.
They kept walking through the night until the sun came out. Then, they ducked into a little cave to sleep for a while. When a man walked into the cave, it startled Pete and Grace. He told them not to be afraid because he was on the run too. The man said they were famous and that’s what inspired him to run. He told them his name was James, and that he was a doctor.
James told them that the FBI came to his house to arrest him because he posted something about Dr. Fauci and the origin of the coronavirus. Apparently, the government passed a law that it is a hate crimeAMP to say or post anything negative about Fauci.
The Split
Pete and Grace were glad to have someone to talk to, but it was hard enough running as a pair, let alone having a third person. So, Pete explained to James that he and Grace would be departing alone. That was fine with James. So, Pete and Grace headed back up the mountain.
As they walked, Pete told Grace they would make their way into northern New Jersey. Grace thanked Pete for saving her. She said, “That was a close call. I thought they got me.” Pete said, “It’s going to take more than that to get us.” They continued walking in the light for several days, and they didn’t see or hear anybody.
Pete told Grace, “Maybe they are still searching the mountain. But, I’m sure they’ll figure it out. We just need to keep moving.” Grace said, “I love you Pete.” And, Pete responded “I love you too Grace. We will win this. Trust me.” Grace said, “I definitely trust you.”
