Why Do People Buy McDonalds?
I think people are so programmed to buy food from McDonalds that they never question anything. I don’t understand it. Why do people buy McDonalds still?
Size
Let’s start with the size of the food. The sandwiches are slightly bigger than a gummy sandwich. I’m the first in line to say that American portions are too big. But these sandwiches are about three bites. And they are super high in sodium and calories. They don’t fill you up at all.
I don’t think the french fries are smaller, but I certainly could be wrong. I have to keep it real here. McDonalds french fries are some of the best french fries out there. But, you need a substantial sandwich to go with them.
Prices
And that brings me to the prices. The sandwiches are getting smaller and the prices are skyrocketing. A fish sandwich is five dollars and it could fit in my palm. A fish sandwich meal is seven dollars. I could easily get a big, juicy hamburger with real ground beef and french fries at a nice restaurant for about ten dollars.
So I don’t understand why people will pay more for less of a sub-standard product. Increasing prices and making items smaller is a marketing strategy that is used quite often. Especially at grocery stores. But McDonalds is using it now too.
Meal Packages
For a good while now, fast food restaurants offer meal packages where you get a sandwich, french fries and a drink. And you have the option to purchase a large size meal. But the sandwich is the same tiny size. The french fries are larger and the drink is larger.
McDonalds gets the french fries and drinks in bulk. That’s not where they make their money. They make money on the sandwiches. Try getting an iced coffee in place of the soda. That will be an upcharge. Look at the cost of upgrading to a large meal. Does the increased cost equal the food difference?
Egg McMuffin
I’ll bring this up as my final point. Where in the world do they get those tiny little English muffins? I have never seen English muffins that small in any grocery store. They are slightly larger than a quarter. And that sandwich was almost four dollars last time I checked.
So why don’t people find an alternative to McDonalds? Because they are conditioned to go there from years of advertising. I grew up in a McDonalds world. And I used to go there regularly. But, I recognize when I’m being ripped off. I only hope more Americans will recognize it. The quick service isn’t worth the products anymore.
