Saturday Night Live Is Dead

Last modified date

Back in the late 1970’s, I never missed a Saturday Night Live show. I would even cut short whatever I was doing to get home and watch. The cast was amazing, the writing was amazing, and the show was hilarious. The show has certainly evolved over the years including cast changes. Some periods were funny and others not so much. But, after a lot of down years recently, Saturday Night Live is dead. It’s time to hang it up.

The Cast

Bowen Yang is a no-name cast member of Saturday Night Live

Here’s the cast today: Aristotle Athari, Aidy Bryant, Michael Che, Pete Davidson, Mikey Day, Andrew Dismukes, Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, James Austin Johnson, Punkie Johnson, Colin Jost, Kate McKinnon, Alex Moffat, Kyle Mooney, Ego Nwodim, Chris Redd, Sarah Sherman, Cecily Strong, Kenan Thompson, Melissa Villasenor, and Bowen Yang.

You can re-read it a few times and then let me know if you recognize them or if any of them have successfully done other acting work. In fairness, only some of the above are featured players. Those are the ones you definitely do not know. This is a train wreck. Of course, it checks all the boxes for white, African American, Asian, Indian, Hispanic and homosexual. But, it reads like a list of Democrats attending a Critical Race Theory seminar.

The Writing

I’ll admit that Saturday Night Live was always left leaning. But, the political satire used to be funny. Since President Trump was in office, they went off the rails. It went from funny to vicious. And, that’s when people like me stopped watching. In fact, I would guess that they lost more than half of their audience.

Even outside of politics, the writing is juvenile and ridiculous. Remember the days of Land Shark, the Killer Bees and two wild and crazy guys. Or, how about Wayne’s World, Church Lady and Sprockets. That is good writing. I can’t name you a skit in the last five years that comes close to any of those.

The Hosts and Musical Guests

Saturday Night Live used to attract great hosts and musical guests that appealed to a large audience. They had hosts like Richard Pryor, Steve Martin and Christopher Walken. And, past musical guests include Paul Simon, Leon Redbone and The Band.

Current hosts include Alec Baldwin, Alec Baldwin and Alec Baldwin. And, current musical guests include Saweetie, Young Thug and Kid Cudi. Does Alec Baldwin appeal to a wide audience? Do the musical guests appeal to a wide audience?

Put it Out of It’s Misery

Saturday Night Live has run it’s course. It’s time to put it out of it’s misery. It has taken such a hard left turn that it’s never coming back. The ratings are in the toilet. NBC is the most biased mainstream media outlet in the world. And, I’m sure they are driving Saturday Night Live to be a political propaganda program for the liberal left. If Lorne Michaels (creator and producer) had the courage to stand up to NBC, he might be able to right the ship and win back viewers. Or, at least he could potentially move the show to another network and gain back some of the old magic.

But, then I wonder if it’s not just that Saturday Night Live has tanked. Maybe there aren’t any guest hosts or musical guests that appeal to a wide audience anymore. In fact, the music industry is dead as well (that’s an upcoming post).

Conclusion

It’s over Lorne. It’s done. Conservatives don’t watch anymore. You and NBC ruined an enormously popular show by becoming political propaganda nonsense. Maybe you’re happy with that. Maybe that’s what you want. The truth is that I watch very little, if any, mainstream television. And, it’s because Saturday Night Live and other shows don’t portray anything that I care about. The show is dead and it needs to be cancelled.
