My Employer Went Woke
I never thought it would happen to me, but it has. My employer went woke. And, it is very, very unpleasant.
Great Replacement
I’m going to call it like I see it. White employees are being replaced with non-white employees. I like the people I work with regardless of their ethnicity. But, I have lost a lot of friends in the last six months. I’m not entirely sure what is driving this change. But, I suspect it has something to do with the recent ESG scoring phenomenon. If you didn’t click on the link, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investing refers to a set of standards for a company’s behavior used by socially conscious investors to screen potential investments. If you don’t comply, it’s harder to get investment money.
Mirroring
Mirroring is when you display the same behaviors as another person you admire. As I mentioned above, we have lost a lot of people by resignation and termination over the past six months. In fact, some of our departments have one person remaining. So, my manager is trying to deflect the situation by telling us this is an opportunity. And, what does he say? He says “Let’s not let a good crisis go to waste.” Does that sound familiar?
How about this? He says “This is a chance to reset the department.” Does that sound familiar? I’m guessing he watches a lot of CNN and MSNBC.
Holidays
Maybe I shouldn’t complain about this. But, we now get Juneteenth as a holiday. And, we have to call Columbus day “Indigenous Peoples Day.” The oddest thing is that our Human Resources Department sends an email on certain holidays explaining the meaning of the holiday. This is alright, but it seems like a very selective process. They didn’t send an email for Thanksgiving, and I’m sure they won’t send one for Christmas. But, I’m sure we’ll get one for Kwanzaa.
Diversity Committee
My employer formed a Diversity Committee. Reading their most recent report, they donated money to non-white colleges and non-white causes. They also have a hiring initiative for non-white candidates. According to Merriam Webster, diversity is the condition of having or being composed of differing elements and the inclusion of people of different races, cultures, etc. in a group or organization. By that definition, our Diversity Committee is not promoting “diversity.”
Conclusion
Please don’t get the wrong impression. I support diversity in the workplace. But, it needs to be a two-way street. My biggest gripe here is that my employer has gone woke. And, I don’t like it because it destroyed a great culture that made me love my job for seven years. Now, I hate my job because it is so stressful every day.
What if I said “We have an opportunity to make America great again?” How do you think that would be received? And, that’s my point.
