A Dog Is Not A Person
Go out and observe a person walking a dog. Take note of the absolute love the person displays toward the dog. And take note of how the person speaks to the dog. The person even carries a little bag to scoop the dogs poop and put it in the bag. Then, the person carries the bag for the remainder of the walk to dispose of it at home. I never really paid much attention to this before. But, it triggered me today. Some people treat their dogs better than people. I say to those people, a dog is not a person.
Food
I know people who make their dog fancy chicken dinners. And I know people who spend hundreds of dollars a month buying dog food. Some people also buy their dogs treats and bones. What I don’t see is these same people donating food to homeless shelters or poor people. Does the person ever make a fancy chicken dinner for a homeless person? I understand the bond and the love a person has for their pet, but a dog is not a person. There are too many starving people in our country that would love a good meal. I’m not suggesting to starve your dog. But, would it hurt you to have the dignity to help another person?
Poop
Unfortunately, there are places like San Francisco where there are so many homeless people that they have nowhere to go to the bathroom. So, they go on the sidewalk or street. Dog lovers carry around a bag and clean up after their dog. I’m certainly not suggesting that people walk around San Francisco cleaning up poop. But, how about donating money for some portable toilets? Just for sanitary reasons, I would do this if my town was festered with poop. Remember that a dog is not a person. People need help too.
Talk
This is a big one for me. If we could only talk to each other like you talk to your dog, then their wouldn’t be so much hatred and division in the world. As far as you know, your dog doesn’t have a differing opinion than you. So, you don’t run the risk of disagreeing with your dog. And your dog won’t ask any hard questions. So, it’s a very safe space.
If you try talking to other people like you talk to your dog, you just might be surprised. For the most part, people are nice and respectful. I have some neighbors who are liberal. But, we get along great. Our differing positions have absolutely nothing to do with our relationship. I know several people at work that don’t share my same views. We have never had any problems and we are very good friends. That’s how it should be.
Care
I have seen people spend thousands and thousands of dollars on veterinarian expenses for their dog. I respect your choice to do that. But, there are a lot of Americans who don’t have health insurance or can’t afford health insurance at no fault of their own. Nobody thinks or talks about these people. Since Obamacare failed, they are an afterthought. I’m not suggesting donating money somewhere to help these people. I’m suggesting that you recognize their plight and raise awareness to our government leaders that this needs to be addressed.
National healthcare is not the answer for this. Everybody would have health insurance including illegal aliens. The healthcare system would be over capacity and care would be rationed. Everybody would pay a price for the overload.
Conclusion
Dogs are great pets and make great companions. But when I see a person walking their dog and how great they treat their dog, it makes me think what a better world it would be if people treated other humans as great as they treat their dogs. It’s not just dogs. It’s all of our beloved pets. And I think we can all learn from this example. Even me.
